How to request access to a data product

If you discover a data product in the catalog that you would like to access, you can request access directly through Microsoft Purview. The request triggers a workflow that requests that the owners of the data resource grant you access to the data product.

This article outlines how to make an access request.

  1. To find a data product, search or browse for it in the data catalog.

  2. Select the data product to open the data product details page.

  3. Select the Request access button.

  4. Fill in the form. The form is different depending on your organization and the data product, but provide all information.

  5. Select Send when you're finished.

  6. Approval requests are sent out to all involved parties.

  7. When your request has been approved or rejected, you'll get an email notification.

How to view data product access requests

  1. You can see all your requests on the Microsoft Purview Data Catalog Discovery drop-down, Data products page, in the My data access tab.

  2. You can select a request to see the detailed request view, understand the approvals or actions taken and view the asset level access provisioning status and instructions if provided.

  3. A request status can go from pending to declined or pending to approved to completed. A new status called completed is introduced to clearly indicate the completion of data asset level access provisioning post approval.

  4. You can also delete an access request by hovering over the request in the list, and selecting the trash can Delete button or selecting the request detail view to use the Delete button. Only requests that are in a pending state or can be deleted. For approved requests, approvers must deprovision access to individual assets before deleting a request.
