SQL Server Licensing in a Virtual World
Recently I blogged about the availability of SP2 of SQL Server and the modifications we made to our licensing to better support virtual environments. A few days ago the SQL team posted a whitepaper about "Using SQL Server 2005 in a Virtual Environment" on microsoft.com.
Besides an intro to virtual environments in general, the paper discusses SQL Server in virtual environments, focusing on the licensing aspect in particular. The document uses 3 examples highlighting different scenarios:
1) Licensing is for an organization that wants to run three physical instances of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition without any virtual environments.
2) Built upon Example 1, the scenario in this example also uses SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on a server with four processors, but also uses five virtual machines, each running two instances.
3) Built upon Example 2, but using the Enterprise edition of SQL Server 2005 instead of Standard Edition.
Hope you find the information useful.
