Sony Handycam

Some time ago I bought a Sony Handycam DCR-HC40. I've always used it with my 32-bit laptop and desktop to transfer video files or even record into a file. Today for the first time I tried to connect it to the Ferrari 4000 running XP Professional x64 Edition. I used the USB cable and the (almost) expected happended. Device not recognized and no 64-bit driver available. Too bad. But ... there's also a firewire port. After plugging in the firewire cable it took about 15 seconds and I was recording to a file in Movie Maker. Cool!

    Just in case you didn't realise, you should NEVER use USB to transfer MiniDV movies (such as created by the HC40). Firewire does a straight digital copy, but USB does an MPEG1 conversion first. The manual doesn't explain this very well.

    Matthew - thanks for the tip! Actually I didn't know that.
    My case of course was that this camera type is supported in 64-bit Windows via Firewire (and not via USB).

    Weird, I was going to ask your thoughts on something very close to this topic. I want to buy a Firewire PCI expansion card (for transferring video) for my xp64 machine. I'm afraid that I will need drivers from the manufacturer for these cards. do you know of any makes/models of these cards that come with 64-bit drivers ?

    64bitter (nice name) - unfortunately I do not have any details about supported Firewire cards. My favorite source for 64-bit driver stuff are http://developer.amd.com/drivers.aspx and http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx.

    Yes, unfortunately those places seem to indicate that none of the firewire cards have 64-bit drivers.
    I was hoping you had inside information :-)

    I guess I should've bought a motherboard with on-board firewire.

    update. I sent email to Belkin about drivers, and they said all their cards have built-in drivers in the OS. Belkin doesn't ship drivers.
