Route64, Phase II

Earlier this year I blogged about a worldwide 64-bit training, Route64. Now it’s time for an update. We’ve taken Route64 to the next level. Details about the tour, the dates, the cities and the content can be found on the registration website: www.route64.net.

Starting January, Microsoft in collaboration with HP and Intel run the second phase of this worldwide Windows 64-bit Training Tour. This training will gives the unique opportunity to learn how to migrate and to test your applications on state-of-the-art 64-bit hardware basically in your neighborhood. RC1 of Windows Sever SP1 has been “released” yesterday, Dec 6th. I will talk about SP1 and its support for x64 later tonight or tomorrow I guess.

Now for the training: Actually this time the preparation took a bit longer than the first one. Still today, some guys of the team are setting up dozens of systems (IPF and x64) here in State of Washington. The systems will be shipped around the world to each individual event. Others are currently struggling with the last preparation and tweaking of content. Next week we have a first dry run here on Microsoft campus and will see how well people, hardware and software are prepared. From what I’ve seen already, I am very confident that we will deliver world class training on top notch hardware close to where you are located.

This time, unfortunately, the training will not be for free. But if you are really serious looking into 64-bit Windows as the platform for your next application release, this training is a must!

Here’s what you get:

Windows 64-bit Hands-On Training

Backstage

As mentioned this training requires quite a bit of equipment and logistics. This tour covers at least 20 cities worldwide. We ship equipment worth ~$1M. Shipment of this sensitive material costs about $20,000 from one location to the next. Some are less expensive, some are more (Asia seems to be the most excpensive. We are currently looking at $250K shipment cost per trip. Since we have two sets of each and everything (speaker, proctors, training material and hardware) we ship about 150 systems on a weekly basis from location to location. In total we have about 2TB of RAM travelling the world. At each location the systems will be set up at least 2 days before the event. All speakers will be on the road in chunks of 3 weeks with one week to relax between two terms.
