Making software simpler
Duncan Stewart of the National Post wrote a column about how simpler is better, especially in software and operating systems. It is sort of fun and good to read but I gave up when he introduced the example of a person with split personality on a hill to explain the concept of Virtualization:
"Why is virtualization a good thing? Let me go back to the analogy. Imagine a case where a human being had one personality that suffered from a terrifying and paralyzing fear of heights. If that persona (and the body) got stuck on a mountain they would be unable to function or move.
If they could somehow be induced to switch into another persona that didn't have acrophobia, they could calmly work their way down the mountain and then (when convenient) they could switch back to the other persona."
Maybe it's just me but I don't get it. Couple of questions:
How the hell did the person get up the hill in the first place?
Does this person use Linux or Windows or OS-X?
Can people with spilt personality make a concise decision about which personality to use at what time?
