Infoworld picks up Virtual PC announcement

One of the latest blog posts in Infoworld's Virtualization Report covers the recent Microsoft announcement to make Virtual PC available at no cost.

Interesting is the last question the article asks: "The question now remains, what will VMware do with Workstation? Will they continue to charge for this product or respond with its own price change? And what will happen with other companies who are trying to sell their own commercial virtualization platforms?"

Makes me think of Domino's Pizza vs. the other pizza guys. Every other week it is more pizza or more toppings for less money. Eventually the pizza folks will have to offer pizza for free ...

Virtualization - hype or not - will become a commodity. It will be part of (any) operating system and you will not be able to make money with Virtualization alone. Unless of course you offer additional services like management tools, Virtual appliances, infrastructure tools work with online or offline VMs and alike.
