Windows Messenger Security (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

1/6/2010

The Windows Messenger Catalog item is designed to use a network. To mitigate potential security risks, use available network security resources.

Best Practices

When using the Windows Messenger Catalog item, remember the following best practice:

Ee487219.collapse(en-US,WinEmbedded.60).gifVerify Sign-in Name Or E-mail Address to Validate Display Names

A contact's display name can be different than their sign-in name or e-mail address. Multiple contacts can have the same display name. To avoid information disclosure to unknown individuals, users should verify a contact's sign-in name or e-mail address before responding to messages. The user can view the sign-in name and e-mail address by right-clicking the contact and choosing Properties.

Default Registry Settings

You should be aware of the registry settings that impact security. If a value has security implications you will find a Security Note in the registry settings documentation.

For more information, see Windows Messenger Registry Settings.

Ports

The Windows Messenger application uses network ports to communicate with servers and directly with clients. For more information about these ports, see Windows Messenger OS Design Development.
