Grids Gone Wild XII
The word on the street is that our certification grid/introductory page for MCITP: Consumer Support Technician is now live--along with updates to the two related prep guides. Visit the page for more info, or just trust me when I tell you that this is new--an option for those of you who work in consumer electronics support...setting up home networks...etc.
If you are interested, the first step is the "big Vista" exam (70-620), same as your first step toward MCITP: Enterprise Support would be.

In related news, we have updated the MCITP landing page to appease good readers such as Mark Morowczynski. At least, at the time of this poasting it is up to date. Within two hours, I imagine we will have released some new information or certification that will render the page obsolete. But I will enjoy the next two hours immensely, knowing we are 100% on top of things here at MIcrosoft Learning.

oh kay so the "desktop support" monkeys are now called "consumer" support really - "consumer"??? sheeshAnonymous

Hey, Dave. Sheesh, no. the Desktop Support certification is still there (for XP it is MCDST, as you know; for Vista it is MCITP: Enterprise Support). This MCITP: Consumer Support is new. The primary audience is Microsoft partners who do consumer support (home systems, retail consumer support for mobile, electronics, etc for individuals) NOT for enterprise desktop support. In other news, we do not have a certification for monkeys. Yet.Anonymous

Dave - "Desktop Support" is traditionally a job title for people who provide IT Support in an enterprise environment, which is why the MCDST and MCITP:Enterprise Support are similar in nature, for XP and Vista respectively. MCITP:Consumer Support is aimed towards people who provide support to home users, ie. more or less the general public. Obviously while there will be a number of areas common to both kinds of support, there's plenty that differs. For example, in an Enterprise, you'll probably be supporting users connecting to a domain, using network devices such as printers and generally maintaining a (potentially large) number of PCs, with some possibly at branch offices. Examples of support needed only in a home environment include users needing to set up their own user accounts for family members, set up parental controls, set up media devices, connect to the 'net etc. I've got all three certs and am proudly a former phone monkey for an ISP. :)Anonymous

Hey Rob.au Thanx for the confirmation on the reps for an ISP :)Anonymous

If Consumer Support webpage was updated, so should be Enterprise Support - the prerequisite isn't mentioned there, either ;) http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcitp/entsupport/default.mspxAnonymous

Arie, I'll see if I can get an OK to publish our upcoming plan for the next fiscal. Rob.au thanks for the great explanation and congratulations on your Vista certs! Natalie, the MCITP: Ent Support page (and a few others) were created using a bad template--we are going back and updating those now. I know they are misleading and have heard the same from a few customers (which is great... because then I know something is wrong and can help get it fixed!!)Anonymous

FYI we updated the ent support page (others in the works). let me know if this is more clear, now. http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcitp/entsupport/default.mspxAnonymous
