Netsh wlan start hostednetwork, The hosted network couldn't be started.
While trying to share my wifi connection, the error "The hosted network couldn't be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation." happened and I wanted to share how to solve this issue.
The problem comes from the adapter that can be in "sleep mode".
As explained in the KB (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2625519), follow this instructions :
- Click on the Start button and select Control Panel.
- Select System and Security.
- Select Device Manager under System.
- Select and expand the Network adapters from the list of devices.
- Find the wireless network adapter and right-click on it and select Properties.
> If you cannot find your adapter in the device manager you might need to restart your computer.
> The 2 next steps are not really required, what you need to do now is to enable your device - Select the Power Management tab.
- Under the Power Management tab, make sure the following option is checked (enabled): “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
You should now be able to restart your hosted network using the classical wlan command.
"PS C:\Windows\system32> netsh wlan start hostednetwork
The hosted network started."
Hope this helps.

Try this............
- Go to device manager.
- Click on view and press on "show hidden devices".
- Go down to the list of devices and expand the node "Network Devices" .
- Find an adapter with the name "Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter" and then right click on it.
- Select Enable
- This will enable the AdHoc created connection, it should appear in the network connections in Network and Sharing Center, if the AdHoc network connection is not appear then open elevated command prompt and apply this command "netsh wlan stop hostednetwork" without quotations.
- After this, the connection should appear.

Guys...if this error comes during hosting wlan hostednetwork i.e a device attacted to the system is not functioning then first off your bluetooth device and then try hosting again. again if it doesn't work then goto device manager...network adapter...check out microsoft hosted network virtual adapter is enable or not. if it is not showing in the list at top click view...then you can see microsoft virtual adapter and enable it and then restart it. somes times due to firewall hostednetwork could not get start, in that case turn it off and try....hostingAnonymous

The key piece of information missing in all of this is that the pc WiFi has to be turned on. On windows 8.1 there seems to be a difference between Disable/Enable and On/Off. My wifi adapter was Enabled in control panel, but was Off in the gui. Turning in on and disconnecting from any Wifi caused the "start hostednetwork" to work.Anonymous

I'm running Windows 7 and I also got the message ''a device attached to the system is not functioning''. This is what worked for me : go to device manager and uninstall your wireless LAN adapter. Then reboot and your sysytem will automatically install the driver again. Then do ''netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow'' and after that ''netsh wlan start hostednetwork''. Good luck!Anonymous
