Document Management

Posted Tuesday, May 27, 2008 1:31 AM by dembod

The Health System is swamped in paper. Although many customers has begun the path towards digitisation, there are few that are anywhere near paperless. However, there are a number of initiatives to invest in ECM and Records Management. SharePoint has a range of capabilities (out of the box) that allow you to respond to these opportunities.

The link below is a recent presentation from Jon Barrett (product specialist in Government and Health) on this very topic:

Case Management (CRM) is a big opportunity

Posted Thursday, May 15, 2008 3:11 AM by dembod

Treating people with Chronic Diseases (Asthma, Cancer, Mental Illness, Cardiovascular Disease etc) is the biggest area of health expenditure by far. Because of this, the Government focus is shifting rapidly to trying to better manage these patients and keep them out of hospital. You will have noticed in the recently announced Federal Budget (and the lead up to the budget) that there is a significant focus on preventative care and community care.

Part of Microsoft's strategy for Health is to reduce the price-point and the risk of technologies required to address these challenges in Health. The way we are doing this is by commoditising core components of the IT system in Health. This is why we have made significant investments in our CRM platform to help you, our Partners, develop Case Management Solutions with this asset.

To help facilitate this, our Dynamics team have developed a useful Vertical Accelerator for CRM in Health. The Accelerator will help you understand how to use the platform to build solutions for better coordination of patient care, improve the quality of care, improve patient satisfaction, improve access to information for care givers, improve clinical trials, improve corporate and financial performance along with a plethora of other relevant scenarios.

DeskActive

Posted Wednesday, May 14, 2008 3:15 AM by dembod

I have come across an interesting Microsoft Partner who have created a very valuable Occupational Health tool that lives on the desktop. DeskActive is a solution that behaves somewhat like a 'virtual personal trainer' that monitors, prompts and reports on your well-being.

The solution tracks everything from amount of key-strokes a minute (to reduce the risk of RSI) to how often you complete the recommended exercise. The innovative UI used by the tool, makes following the instructions much easier than if it relied simply on static images and text.

Worldwide there are chronic shortages of Health and Wellness Workers. Consumers are going to have to rely more and more on virtual interfaces. In the case of desk based exercise and occupational health, I think that the virtual interface works very well.

DeskActive also comes with a management application that allows health professionals and or employers to review compliance with the assigned activities. It also has a two way communication mechanism with the client. This is a trend we are observing around the world where ICT monitoring is proving a very effective mechanism to improve outcomes and facilitate early intervention.

Animate your User Interface

Posted Wednesday, May 14, 2008 3:13 AM by dembod

One of the significant reasons for push back on using IT by Clinicians, is that the User Interfaces for most applications are not intuitive and feel more like an accounting package than a clinical tool. The animation capabilities for user interfaces in Vista provide a significant tool to redesign how clinicians interact with our applications. Some of you may have seen the VERY cool Vista Widget called "Contoso Health" which some of us carry around on our PC's. For those of you who have not, here is one screen scrape:

You will note that animation is being used by the widget to show how peripheral views can be allowed for to keep an eye on other patients or vital sign feeds.

The actual source code for Contoso can be found at:

You have made the right decision. Microsoft is well placed in Health Posted Friday, April 18, 2008 3:23 AM by dembod

If you have developed your solution leveraging the Microsoft assets, you have made the right bet. Microsoft is the best priced, best penetrated and most customised platform for Health.

There is a wonderful alignment between Microsoft’s assets and what Health Reform is trying to achieve. Our customers are investing in technology to facilitate collaboration between healthcare workers, that moves the clinically relevant data to the point of care, that provides decision support to doctors, patients and nurses and that reduces the administrative burden on our constrained workforce. The Microsoft Stack does all this. Its fits with health is wonderful.

We at Microsoft are making significant investments in leveraging our assets to assist the Health Reform Agenda. Key to our success is you, our Partners.

How can we help you? We now have a dedicated Health & Social Services Team, we have made a number of recent investments in acquiring Health specific technology, we are undertaking significant industrial design projects to customise IT for Clinical end users, we have a significant and growing footprint in Health ensuring that more and more of your target customers are standardising on the Microsoft Stack, and we are investing in building a Health ecosystem for the already 989 (and growing) Health Partners.

This blog is one of a number of communication mechanisms we are creating to help you get better connected with us as a corporation and to leverage the investments that we and other Partners are making in Health.

We will provide you with regular updates on relevant technology, events and other opportunities. We have already made a number of significant announcements recently and you may want to use the links below to access more info on them.

The industrial design project in Health is called CUI (Common User Interface) and you can find information and the design guides at: www.mscui.com. Our recent acquisitions include a health platform which creates patient centric views on data, a Hospital Information System of our own, and technology to empower patients to make better decisions on their and their loved ones Health. You can find out more about these investments at https://www.microsoft.com/hsg/

On behalf of the Health Team at Microsoft Australia, we look forward to a very productive and profitable relationship with you
