The Greatest Musicals of All Time

Since I was in Junior High School, I played professionally in the pit orchestras for various musicals. I must have played in over 100 different musicals. I've played Rogers and Hammerstein and Gilbert and Sullivan, and others whom you've never heard of. But there are two musicals that stand out for me: West Side Story and Singin' in the Rain. The first is probably the greatest retelling of Romeo and Juliet I've ever seen or heard, with songs that can consistently make me snap my fingers, laugh, and cry (who can forget "Make of our Hands?"). The latter... Well, if you can find anyone else who can take a dozen random songs and turn them into a plot, let me know.

Unpopular, but true. I also love Moulin Rouge.

I've always enjoyed Rent. Out of all the musicals that I went (was dragged?) to, that was one of my favorites.

+1 for Moulin Rouge as the best film musical in recent years.

I don't know if it's just because I saw it early in its run with the original cast, but "Hairspray" was probably the best stage show I've ever seen.

Well, it's certainly not one of the Greatest Musicals of All Time, but it was pretty amusing to see how Catherine Johnson turned the Abba greatest hits into Mama Mia.
