Hi Ken Thanks for your comment.  Let me cover off some of the points you made.  I agree some businesses do want features like Media Center - that's what the Ultimate version is for.   As for your domain at home - the vast majority of home users don't have a domain and there is no need for one.  There are exceptions - like yourself - who is obviously IT literate but the average PC user will have no idea how to setup, configure and manage a domain based environment. I'm what I consider to be quite tech-savy with an MCSE etc. but I have no desire nor no need what-so-ever to have a domain at home.  I'd just find it overkill.  I do want things like Media Center though - which is why I've got Home Premium running. Hi,

Im not trying to troll, but $399 for Vista Ultimate is simply too much to ask for. Ive installed the RC1 version and played about with it, and while it is impressive, IMHO its simply not worth the $399 price tag.

I compare this to Mac OS X Tiger, which is $200 for a five client "Family" license. I assume that there is currently no such equivalent for Vista?

Ive used Windows as my day to day operating system since Windows 95, and while Im very happy with my Windows XP system, Im seriously considering switching to a Mac Pro in the next couple of years, where I'd be using OS X as my day to day system, and Windows for legacy apps.

I really hope Microsoft take some notice and at the very least, for $400 bucks for Vista Ultimate, make it installable on at least more than one machine.

I also think that the multiple versions of Vista are confusing. As a power user, Im quite happy to sit down and use XP Pro, but really, I think the Vista SKU's should be slimmed down to one for home use, and one for business use.

OK I must be blind -- I don't see the prices you state at that link.

    However Amazon has posted prices.

to Mark: Don't forget that your making the assumption that you will need Ultimate edition! Ultimate seems to me to be the equivalent to the leather package in a sports car, it's somewhat marked up, but you get a few really cool bonuses. IE: The media centre stuff and the tablet add-ons.

I do however strongly agree that Microsoft should come up with a competing "Family" strategy as Mac.

Maybe sell 1 Ultimate for a central Home PC, and then 3 home premium or basics in a package under 400$

Finally as for the complication on all the versions, I thought that at first as well, however I find the titles self explanatory, and the marketing collateral is also very clear on what you get and what you don't get.

Overall if you look at previous editions there is a modest price increase, and rightfully so. There is so much under the hood that we don't see, and it's a credit to Microsoft when they can get the price as low as they do. (I'm talking patented pieces of code that they have to go and pay a others for)

My only major issue with the new pricing is the disparity between Canadian and US prices. While the CND dollar continues to rise against the USD, Microsoft maintains a 100$ price difference between Vista in the US and in Canada. There is very little justification for that,  and the proof will be that many Canadians will just go buy Vista across the border because it will be almost 60$ cheaper. (Common Microsoft this isn’t a car!)

The "family license" that Apple offers sounds really nice, but don't forget that they made money on all of those machines that you may have in your home.
