Windows 7 running SQL Server 2008

After really enjoying the experience of running Windows 7 on my netbook last night, I have now moved on to installing it on one of my other PCs, a Tablet PC. The single most exciting thing about this install was that despite the drivers not being part of the build, once I ran a Windows Update on the machine there only a single unknown device. This surprised me as this same machine during a Windows Vista install some time back required much searching for drivers before all those pesky unknown devices disappeared.   Just shows the hard work that has been going on the background on the drivers front for both Vista and Windows 7. The remaining device was the Bluetooth radio and the fact that it did not install without vendor drivers did not surprise me given that this hardware uses a proprietary Bluetooth stack. This installed with no problems.

The other piece of good news is that the 2.5million download pressure is off until January 24th, for more details check out this post from the Windows Team Blog.

SQL Server 2008 Install

The install a SQL Server 2008 instance and associated management tools went without a hitch. In fact it was so uneventful this is just to let you know it works.

GUI format of USB drive

I was asked how to format a flash FAT32 from the GUI and why I choose to use diskpart.exe. Well the answer to the second part is that I think its easier and the step by step for the first part follows bellow:

Start –> Control Panel –> Administrative Tools –> Computer Management

Step01

Right click on the flash to be formatted

Step02

Step03

Step03.5

Step04

Step05

Step06

and your done.

I also cant work out how to completely deleted the partition table using the GUI

Windows Live Writer

I have also posted this blog, complete with pictures using Window Live Writer a great little editor that is part of Windows Live Essentials. I think its very efficient in achieving the job it was designed for. Being a bit a new blogger I have not really used any other tools so you can hardly consider my opinion expert in these matters.

Have a great week.
