I just logged a request with MS to check if a cu7 Kernel was adequate. Their reply was.....
It requires both Application and Kernel hotfix. Because Application layer has also been modified to adapt SQL 2014 compatibility. Otherwise, it will just require for latest kernel update.
In a word, in order to use SQL 2014, CU7 (Application and Kernel )on R2 is essential. - Anonymous

I tested many things this days with SQL server 2016, Windows Server 2016, and Dynamics AX 2012 R3 here are the results:Windows Server 2016 is compatible with SQL server 2016 and Dynamics AX 2012 R3Sharepoint Foundation 2010 & 2013 are compatible with AX 2012 R3, but don't work in Windows Server 2016Sharepoint Server 2016 is NOT compatible with AX 2012 R3SQL server 2014 works on Windows server 2016So if you going to install any AX R2 or R3 versions, dont use SQL server 2016 and Windows 2016 until they release a hotfix if you intend to use Sharepoint
