Paint.NET - cool student project

Sat through a presentation on Paint.NET – really cool paint app built on .NET from students from WSU.  They are coming out with a 2.0 version on Dec 17th.

    How do I save a 256 color GIF image with a transparency? When I save as GIF, it resets the alphas back to 255. Hey how do I even see what the image looks like in 8-bit color? I should be able to switch to palette color mode and edit the pic/set transparency color etc.
