Network protocol support

Because virtual private networks (VPNs) support the most common network protocols, it is easy for clients on Ethernet and TCP/IP networks to use VPNs. Any network protocol supported by remote access is inherently supported in a VPN. This means that you can remotely run applications that are dependent upon particular network protocols. In turn, this translates to reduced costs in setting up and maintaining VPN connections.

For information about creating a VPN connection, see Make a virtual private network (VPN) connection.

Notes

  • The IPX/SPX protocol is not available on Windows XP 64-bit Edition (Itanium) and the 64-bit versions of the Windows Server 2003 family.

  • IPX cannot be configured for incoming or dial-up connections in the Windows Server 2003 family.

  • IPX cannot be configured on a computer running a member of the Windows Server 2003 family that is being used as a VPN server.
