Back up cluster disk signatures and partition layouts

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To back up cluster disk signatures and partition layouts

  1. Open Backup.

The Backup or Restore Wizard starts by default, unless it is disabled.

  2. Click Advanced Mode on the Backup or Restore Wizard.

  3. On the Tools menu, click ASR Wizard.

  4. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

Important

  • You will need a blank 1.44 MB floppy disk to save your system settings and media to contain the backup files. If your computer does not have a floppy drive, see "Troubleshooting" in Related Topics.

Notes

  • To start Backup, click Start, point to All programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup.

  • By default, Backup Operators do not have the user rights necessary to create an Automated System Recovery (ASR) backup on a cluster node. However, Backup Operators can perform this procedure if that group is added to the security descriptor for the Cluster service. You can do that using Cluster Administrator or cluster.exe. For more information, see Give a user permissions to administer a cluster and Cluster.

  • Automated System Restore not only backs up cluster disk signatures and partition layouts, it also backs up the system state and other data associated with the operating system.

  • You later need to restore the signature of the quorum disk, for example, if you experience a complete system failure, and the signature of the quorum disk has changed since you last backed up, or if you experience Event ID 1034 errors when replacing a disk.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
