Configure settings for new clients for RIS

To configure settings for new clients for RIS

Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
In the console tree, right-click the applicable Remote Installation Services (RIS) server.

Where?
- Active Directory Users and Computers/Applicable domain/Applicable organizational unit (such as Computers)/Applicable RIS server
Click Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the Remote Install tab, and then click Advanced Settings.
In the Advanced Settings dialog box, click the New Clients tab.
In Generate client computer names using, either select the client computer naming format you want to use, or click Customize to create a client computer naming format.
To specify where to create the client computer account, click one of the following options:
- Default directory service location
- Same location as that of the user setting up the client computer
- The following directory service location
If you chose the last option, click Browse and specify where to create the computer accounts.

Notes

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Domain Admins group or the Enterprise Admins group in Active Directory, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure. For more information, see Default local groups, Default groups, and Using Run as.
This topic does not apply to Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
To open Active Directory Users and Computers, click Start, click Run, type dsa.msc, and then click OK. For information about creating a shortcut so you can easily open Active Directory Users and Computers with runas, see Related Topics.
This procedure applies only to client computer accounts that are not prestaged.
After performing this procedure, be sure to assign the appropriate permissions to users who install from RIS on the client computer. This is necessary so that users can create computer accounts within the chosen domain or organizational unit. For more information, see Related Topics.
