Lesson 4: Renaming Model Items

New: 5 December 2005

Some of the entity and attribute names in the AdventureWorks model are not easy to read. They should be changed to reflect how you and your Report Builder users think about these items. In this lesson, you will learn how to rename model items so that they are more user-friendly.

To rename model items

  1. In the Tree view, right-click the Sales Order Header entity, and then click Rename.

  2. Type the following: Sales Order.

  3. With the Sales Order entity selected, locate the Sales Order Details role in the List view.

  4. Right-click the Sales Order Details role, and then click Rename.

  5. Type the following: Sales.

  6. In the List view, expand the Total Due attribute.

  7. Right-click Total Total Due, and then click Rename.

  8. Type the following: Sum Total Due.

  9. In the Tree view, select the Sales Order Detail entity, and rename the entity Sales.

    Note

Although a role and an entity may reference the same model item, they can use different names within the model.

  10. In the Tree view, select the Sales Person entity.

Notice that there is a role called Sales Person within the Sales Person entity. The name of this role is misleading because this role really links to the Employee entity.

  11. Rename the Sales Person role to Employee.

  12. On the File menu, click Save All.

Next Steps

You have successfully renamed an entity, role, and attribute within your model. In the next lesson, you will hide model items that you do not want your users to see. See Lesson 5: Hiding Model Items.
