How to: Create, Delete, or Modify a Role Assignment (Report Manager)

A role assignment specifies tasks that users or groups can perform relative to an item in the report server folder hierarchy. Reporting Services uses a role-based security model that maps a user or group account to one or more roles. The roles describe the tasks or actions that can be performed.

You can create role assignments on the root node (the Home folder) or on specific folders or items further down the hierarchy.

Role assignments are required for accessing a report server. Once a role assignment is defined, it is inherited throughout the folder hierarchy. However, you can create new role assignments that explicitly override the inherited role assignment.

To create a role assignment

  1. Start Report Manager.

  2. In Report Manager, navigate to the Contents page, and open the folder that contains the item that you want to apply a role assignment to.

  3. Click the Properties tab.

  4. Click the Security tab.

  5. Perform one of the following:

    • If the item uses the security settings of a parent item, click Edit Item Security, click OK, and then click New Role Assignment.
    • If the item already has item-specific security defined for it, click New Role Assignment.
  6. Type the name of a group or user account. You can specify only one account name for each role assignment.

  7. Select one or more role definitions that describe how the user or group should access the item, and then click OK.

    To determine which tasks a role definition supports, click the name of the role definition.

    If existing role definitions do not include the combination of tasks that you want, click New Role to create a new role. For more information, see How to: Create, Delete, or Modify a Role (Report Manager).

To modify or delete a role assignment

  1. In Report Manager, navigate to the item that uses the role assignment you want to view or modify.

  2. Click the Properties tab.

  3. Click the Security tab. This displays the role assignments for the current item.

  4. Perform one of the following:

    • To edit a role assignment, click Edit next to the role assignment that you want to modify. Select role definitions to add to the role assignment, or clear existing selections. You cannot modify the account name. Click Apply.

    Note

    You can click the role definition name to view the task list it supports. If existing role definitions are insufficient, click New Role to create a new one.

    • To delete a role assignment, select the check box next to the role assignment, and then click Delete.
