Using Visual Studio for SharePoint Development

Applies to: SharePoint Foundation 2010

The topics in this section discuss how to use and customize Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 to maximize your efficiency as a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation developer.

Note

We recommend that you not use earlier versions of Visual Studio for SharePoint Foundation development, because Visual Studio 2010 includes tools to systematize and partially automate many important parts of the development process, especially the packaging of your SharePoint projects into Features and Solutions. The downloadable SharePoint tools that are available for some earlier versions of Visual Studio do not function for the 64-bit versions of Windows on which SharePoint Foundation must be deployed.

Tip

There is much more information about using Visual Studio to develop SharePoint Foundation solutions in the help for Visual Studio. See SharePoint Development in Visual Studio.
