Well, I believe your problem is kinda related with corrupt OS files, incorrect system settings and so on. What you have to do is simply check system files for corruption, restore your machine to an earlier date. Use a hotfix available and if doesn't work go with the other options. Follow the steps given below until your problem is completely resolved. The steps given below can be used for System File Checker and System Restore. Use System File Checker:

  1. Insert Windows installation disc.
  2. Click the Start button.
  3. Point to All Programs | Accessories.
  4. Select Run.
  5. Type the following: CMD
  6. Press ENTER.
  7. In the Command Prompt dialog type following command: SFC /SCANNOW
  8. After the process is successfully performed, type EXIT and press ENTER. Reboot your machine for the changes to take effects. Use System Restore:
  9. Click Start, point to All Programs | Accessories | System Tools.
  10. Select System Restore.
  11. A wizard opens.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Select a previous restore point.
  14. Confirm the action and follow the on-screen instructions. Hotfix: smitalandvikas.com/reginout

Hi, I have tried all of the above without success. No updates since December 14. The error occurs when you instruct windows to search for updates. The clock is correct and as yet I have not found a fix that solves the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    LISTEN EVERYONE!
time on your computer must be totally correct.
if it deviates even by 1 minute you will get error.
so, google for word "time" and you will get websites that will tell you exact time.
enter that time in your date and time settings and you should be able to run windows update successfully.

Yep, make that a +1 for deep packet inspection on a Fortigate firewall.

I have tried all the recommended "fixes" except for telephoning the Helpdesk. My time is synchronised with the internet through the recommended server, all my other programmes update regularly, but Windows 7 (I usually use Firefox) still shows error code 80072f8f. When I took this to a computer repair shop, it wouldn't come up with the toolbar flag showing a problem! I would like to have Windows 10 but it is increasingly obvious this is not going to happen unless I exchange my computer.
