Wiki Life: User Pages

Hello and welcome everybody to our Wednesday - Wiki Life post.

How do you introduce yourself to the community on your profile page? Do you say something about yourself, for example that you like dogs? Do you have the feeling that there is not enough space to tell the community who you are?
It needs hard work to give information about yourself in a short manner. But here is another problem. Imagine that you are an active member of the community (which I think you are) and you want to guide the people to blogs you are working on, samples you have written, or more important: to wiki articles you have contributed. How can you solve these problems?

A possible solution is a user page. User pages have been around for a while, but were not used heavily. Currently there are only five user pages I'm aware of, that means I can find them through the User Page tag on the wiki:

These five guys use this page to tell something about themselves, where do they contribute, and what they have contributed in the past. But what is if I do not have such amount of contributions? No problem. Everybody has started as a beginner. One step after the other. If you need a central place to tell the people who you are or a central place for yourself to find your articles: use a user page.

Are you interested in creating your own user page? If you have created one, let me know and post a comment to this post.

User Pages have taken some heat, as some people think of them as "Vanity Pages", but they all explain why they exist on the page... Note: This is a "User Page". User pages on TechNet Wiki exist for the following reasons: (1) To link to these pages from various online profiles, blog posts, etc. (2) To allow collaboration on filling out such information. (3) To allow easy editing for filling out such information. (4) To act as an aggregation or collection of links that help define what a person does.

So User Pages should be used more as collaborative link aggregation and collection rather than as a vanity or bragging page. There is no where else on TechNet where you can drop 50 links about what you've done, organize them, move them around, update them, etc. So this meets that need.

I think that these pages would benefit if they had more consistent titles. I'm going to change the titles to start with "User Page:" just so that it's a little more consistent. Thanks, Jan!

User Pages can also make people easier to contact. It might be a good idea for all to put a note on their page along the lines of "If you need to contact me, just leave a comment on this page". I'll update the article below with into on user pages.  social.technet.microsoft.com/.../9352.wiki-how-to-contact-a-wiki-author-or-contributor.aspx

This is a nice idea ! I will work on creating a User Page soon. Well, I can imitate the existing user pages for creating one for mine however, Are there any official guidelines for creating User Pages ?

Bruno, that's a great idea. I'll see if I can confirm that as a new process with the user page owners. Thanks!

Bruno, I like the idea too :)   And yes it fill a way to keep a link of wiki article done or edited. Santosh, I used to simply copy the user page layout and "notes" from Ed's user page. I know some other layout exist, but it's a good starting point !
