Alright already

The fact that I failed to begin my blog without first clearly identifying myself seems to be fueling the conspiracy theorists in the Flight Sim community so I thought I'd take just a minute to fill in the blanks. I didn't think who I was or what title I held was really relevant to what I had to say. Well, I guess now you can be the judge. Whatever...

Name: Mike Gilbert

Title: Lead Program Manager

Reponsibility: Ensuring success of the project, primarily from a production standpoint (i.e., making sure we ship excellent bits on time)

Tenure: 8 years at Microsoft; 4 on FS team

Experience: Former Access/VB/VBA developer, consultant and author; private pilot (~250hrs, 248.8 in taildraggers <g>); managed scenery production process in FS8 and FS9 before assuming lead PM role

Hobbies: Husband, dad, cooking, golf, transformation

So, you see I don't really do anything myself, other than make sure everybody else has what they need to go be excellent. On the up side it does give me chance to see how they do things and comment on it here. Happy now?

People sometimes have to put a face on what they read... anyway, may I say, "Nice to meet you!" ? =)

Thanks. As a former Software project manager, I know how much fun that can be (esp. keeping the testers, SQA, and developers from going at each others' throats).

I guess from a scenery designer viewpoint, the $64 question is whether SCASM procedural-style scenery still be supported or will everything be XML. It seems like the Microsoft corporate vision is XML and .Net, so maybe that answers my own question.

I take it from the posts that Vista/directX10 (or whatever) is the target architecture. At least, that would make sense to me.

One other thing -- it seems like other game engines (such as UT) work more with reviewers to provide benchmarking capability. Mostly what I see from the simming environment is OpenGL-based games. Since you have Kiosk-mode (does anyone use that) maybe a benchmark mode could be provided so that hardware performance could be sorted.

Now come on who's picture did you post? HMMM?

    That picture looks...well...too NORMAL!

I mean you're shattering my image of you guy's
as somekind of Uber Geeks. The very least you
could have done was wear a propeller beanie, or
something like Steve Lacy has on his blog.

He LOOKS the part..kinda half crazed. LOL

Seriously, keep up the great work and glad
you put a face up...even if its not yours<G>
