-in the "WSS to MOSS Migration" post you say "As you should install MOSS prior to installing Project Server, you'll want to first upgrade your existing WSS content to MOSS." -can you please review this question and let me know if you have any advice, I have posted all over newsgroups but not getting anything, I am burying myself in documentation but am not finding these two core questions answered QUESTION we are bringing in a new MS Project Server 2007 solution, a.) what are the benefits of running Sharepoint Server 2007 versus Sharepoint Services in an MS Project Server solution b.) can we bring in Sharepoint Server 2007 later and expect it to upgrade Sharepoint Services or are we hurting ourselves by not bringing in Sharepoint Server at the beginning, any thoughts or experience on this would be appreciatedAnonymous

Hi, I currently have a copy of Project Professional 2007 and I would like to try Project Server 2007. Is there any way I can obtain an evaluation copy of Project Server 2007? I've looked all over Microsoft's site with no success. Thanks, SeanAnonymous

-we are a consultant and just getting started with Project 2007 in the lab, we will want to manage projects for multiple clients and give client staff access to PWA sites, does anyone have thoughts if a.) all Project Workspaces should exist under a single PWA or if b.) a PWA should be created for each customer's projects, we want to have the ability for our staff to access all projects, be resources on all projects, search all customer projects, and hopefully be assigned different costs from one client's project to another (may be $50 and hour for one but $75 and hour for another) for budgeting -I just don't know if it is a requirement for us to create seperate PWA sites for each customer in order to achieve this level of seperation, are there enough mechanisms in a single PWA site (Groups and Categories for example) to get the job done or are we best creating a PWA site for each of our customers -I like the idea of our staff all only having one PWA site to work from regardless of which of our customers projects they are assigned to, does anyone have thoughtsAnonymous

You need to create separate workspaces per project. We don't have an option to change this. I don't see any reason why you couldn't run with one PWA site. There's nothing in what you describe that says you shouldn't. The only reason to create separate sites is if you wanted the customer to access the siteAnonymous

- Lookup tables mixed up values
- Unknown errors message in lookup table
- Check in problems Do you familiar with these kind of problems?

Carmit, Unfortunately, we cannot discuss items such as to SP plans in this forum. However, I would HIGHLY recommend that you report your issues to our Product Support team. As I mentioned in an earlier post, we track all issues and use this for SP planning. Feel free to provide more specifics around the issues you are facing.Anonymous

We're evaluating PS2007 and have run into at least one important workflow issue. We'd like to allow anyone to create a task "request" and then be able to "promote" that task to the actual project planning file. One method might be to create a workspace task, and then transfer the task to the project DB; however, there doesn't appear to be much integration between a workspace and the associated project planning DB. If we have to go re-enter the task, we lose the history, have to replicate attachments and notes, etc. Are we missing the obvious (or not so obvious) way to make this happen? Thanks much!Anonymous

I'd like to have project drive my client billing. To do this I need to be able to assign mulitiple rates to resources (people). One task might be at $100.00 per hour while another type of task might be $150.00 per hour. If I could then pull a report that would list tasks and hours spend on those tasks by resource/task rate I can use that information to bill clients. How is this accomplished? If I can't get Project/Project server to do it then I have to have my developers input their time spent into Project and a third party software. I'd like to avoid that! Thanks!Anonymous

One of the powerful features of PWA in 2003 was the simplicity of the process by which resources could enter their time. On the one "Tasks" page, they could enter project time and administrative time, and they could enter actual work plus remaining work for project assignments. This simplicity was important because team members were often resistant to the time entry process, and it needed to be easy. The separation of timesheets from task entry in 2007 seems to have made the process considerably more complex for team members. I see that information can be transferred bi-directionally, but this still makes for a cumbersome worklflow. My questions, therefore, are:
- What is the simplest recommended workflow for team members who have both project work and administrative work?
- Is there a simple, "one-stop" process available for these resources?
- What is the recommended method for entering actual work by day and remaining work on a task, for project work?
- It appears that "remaining work" is not available on either view. Can it be added to the timesheet? If we modify the tasks view to add it, does it behave the same way that it did in 2003?
- What happened to grouping by project, and all of the "filter/group/search" capabilities? I would be very interested in hearing about everyone's experience with these features. Thanks

We are currently having a problem with Assignment Owners. When a material resource has been given an assignment and an Assignment Owner is set for it, the Assignment Owner gets an error logging into thier PWA My Tasks page. Delete the material resource from the task and the user (Assignment Owner) can now access thier My Tasks page normally. Is there security or other settings we may be missing? Do we need an RBS to make Assignment Ownership work? Is there a guide or postings that explain more about Assignment Owners? ThanksAnonymous

-I have read that if I create a Site Collection List it will write to its own database, share navigation bar and breadcrumb bar, content types, workflows, security groups, lookup fields across lists, search scope) -now under the Web Application and Site Collection List for the default instance of PWA I can create Sites and Site Collections but not to their own databases and other segration, so when I read the benefits seperate content to other Site Collections in Project 2007 does that translate to creating another PWA instanceAnonymous

To: Tony Scribner: You can assign up to five different rates per resource using cost rate tables. In a resource view, double click on the name, click the Costs tab on the resource information dialog, then click on any of the five cost rate table tabs (A-E) and set each rate. Then in a usage view, insert the Cost Rate Table column and set the rate table for each assignment.Anonymous

I have heard that in Project 2007 we will be able to structure the project calendar to match our accounting calendar months. I have looked everywhere and can not find confirmation of this. This would be a tremendous enhancement for those of us that incorporate schedules and actual costs into an earned value system. Thanks, NeilinAnonymous

I've just been setting up MOSS and Project Server 2007 in a 2 server Farm and have discovered some descrepancies with the instructions posted on the Technical Website. I'm using the latest Deployment Guide and have discovered some conflicting security instructions (Pg 49) "Start the Office SharePoint Server Search Service" item 8. Farm Search Service Account must be member of Admins Group and Farm Admins Group (WSS_Admin_WPG) Those found in the Plan for Administrative and Service Accounts (MOSS) Standard Account Requirements - SSP Accounts. Office SharePoint Server Search Account must NOT be a member of Farm Admins Group. Which is it??? Also, MOSS Deployment... (Pg 52) When creating a web application to host the SSP and create the SSP. The My Sites site collection web application - Is this where we want a PWA site to be created later or do we want a 3rd web application? Wait there's more... When installing Project Server on the MOSS server (since it's only a 2 server Farm) I used The Deployment Guide for Project Server 2007 - Install Project Server on Application Servers. (Pg 113) Configure Farm Services - instructs you to Stop the Windows SharePoint Services Web Application. If you do this then When you come to Provision Project Server to the Farm you can't access the SSP Administration Site. Should this be started or not? One last question... Later in the year our AD Forest is being migrated into our parent company's. Are there going to be tools to change all the service accounts, can this be done through SharePoint Administration?Anonymous

We are a MS partner and expect to upgrade a decent number of clients to 2007 this year. The issues that Michael brings up look like they are going to be the big thorn in our upgrades. Time entry was already dreaded, but looks to have gotten more complicated and require more steps than previously. Our clients are very aware that this affects every user of the system and would like to see this get easier.

We are using MSP 2003 within the company. For our bid work, what I would like to do is to set up a schedule with several costed options. In other words be able to select from a series of task options and MSP would only sum up those I had selected. At the moment I either have to put all the options in one schedule in which case the summary tasks are wrong, or just set up a series of separate, unlinked schedules. Anybody else tried this? Thanks.Anonymous

Hello, Being a newbie to EPM so please forgive me. Just wondering how do you create departmental security so only the people who belong to specific departments can view the available resources. thx in advance.Anonymous
February 11, 2007
Jeremy, On selecting different combinations of tasks to calculate different costed options... Have you tried using custom flag fields to identify the different tasks that make up an option - one flag field = one option? Then use a custom cost field for each of the options with a formula that tests the flag and copies the task cost into the custom cost field. That should give you 10 cost options corresponding to the 10 custom cost fields. And you can specify that thecost fields should sum up so that the summary level costs for those fields should be accurate. GrahamAnonymous

Cesar, there are many resources for installation on Technet and a few on MSDN. Try starting here: http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/65b96c9d-67e1-4e5b-9119-62f7ff6b83861033.mspx?mfr=true The best guide I have found for installing Project Server 2007 is either the "Deploy Project Server 2007 to a server farm environment" technet doc: http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/5892547e-7c7d-4a7f-b4ea-22822df3acb11033.mspx?mfr=true or the blog entries by Tony Zink: http://www.pptspaces.com/msprojectreporterblog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=cea5da16%2D0c29%2D40a7%2D845e%2D4eea7cbc844d&ID=31 If you are installing Project Server 2007 for the first time, I would plan on installing it at least twice to get up to speed. First follow Tony Zink's instructions in a stand alone environment. There you won't need to worry about security as much. Once you've got that installation working, then install with domain service accounts and minimal priveleges, which will probably cause a new set of challenges. -jAnonymous

I've posted this in the newsgroup too, but nobody wanted to respond :) Anyways, we have a Project Server 2007 machine, and users are running XP or Vista and office professional 2007. We also have two forests that these users can be in. Project Server is in forest A. Users in Forest A running Vista and XP can auth use office pro just fine against the project server. Users in Forest B running XP can also work fine (after we've saved their forest A credentials for the PWA site and installed the CA certificate since it's a private CA). Users in Forest B running Vista always get the "Bad certificate (CERT_REV_FAILED)(ID=0x800a1529)" error in project pro. I've done the same steps as I've done for the XP machine (saved the credentials for PWA and imported the CA Cert). These same users can hit the PWA site fine without any cert errors. Any ideas on how to get this scenario to work? Could project pro be bubbling up the wrong error?Anonymous

Even within the same forest, I've read that authentication between trusted domains can require a shortcut trust. So, I'm wondering whether it is possible to shortcut a forest trust with an external trust and help in your situation. Also, I've seen security policy differences between trusted domains prevent authentication. The tech's told me that is what the problem was, but would not give me additional information as to the specifics.Anonymous

I have installed PS 2007 many times in our test machine, published projects, integrated with Outlook and we are now tweaking the security. I'm not sure what happened but a couple days ago we stop reciving email notifications for new tasks or status requests and every time we try to Import New Assigment from Outlook we get the following error: Communicating with Server.... and in a separate error message screen appears: SOAP Exception - title The Server was unable to process the last request. All Services look OK and the event viewer has an error with event ID 5000. Has anybody experince this problem and more importantly does anybody know how to fix it. Tahnk You.Anonymous

Two questions:
- We're having trouble with creating Activities ("Project Lite" or Web-based scheduling). We're unable to save and publish Activities and keep getting an error that tells us "All required fields are not complete" (or words to that effect). We do have a few required Custom Fields, but we're filling them all in and we can't figure out what is missing. Anyone else seeing this?
- We'd like to export a copy of the Reporting Database to let the developers go to work on it. Is there a way to do this through the PWA admin interface, or does it need to be done through SQL? Muchas gracias in advance!

Cesar Cruz had a problem with the Outlook Syncrhonization: I had a similar issue. For some Enterprise Resource Custom field(s) the solved it. I could identify the fields with following statements: select * from dbo.MSP_CUSTOM_FIELDS where MD_PROP_ROLLDOWN_TO_ASSN = 1 and select * from dbo.MSP_PROJECT_CUSTOM_FIELDS where MD_PROP_ROLLDOWN_TO_ASSN = 1 I also found this on Microsoft’s web site. The timesheet PSI can break the Outlook add-in if resource custom field roll-downs are turned on When you view task assignments in Project Web Access or in the Microsoft Office Outlook add-in, you may receive one of the following error messages: dataset constraint violation SOAP Exception: The Server was unable to process the last request. This issue may occur if a resource has multiple assignments and if an enterprise resource custom field has the Calculation for Assignment Rows option set to Roll down, unless manually specified.Anonymous
