Analysis Services Actions and Drillthrough Capabilities Supported in PerformancePoint

There are two places that Analysis Services Drillthrough and Actions are surfaced in PerformancePoint monitoring and analytics:

1. Deployed Scorecards

2. Analytic Grids and Charts

I've been asked a few times why Show Details is disabled, or a given action doesn't show up, or why the Additional Actions menu shows that "No Actions Exist" in some cases when you know they do exist.

We are hoping to clear all this up and support drillthrough and all actions, everywhere, in a future release, but here's how it works right now:

In Scorecards:

Analysis Services Drillthrough is available, by right-clicking on a cell, and choosing Show Details. Sometimes, Show Details is disabled. This can happen for the following reasons:

1. The cell in the scorecard is not an Analysis Services cell. It might be an aggregation that is computed by the scorecard itself, in which case there is not really a cube cell to drillthrough to.

2. The cell in the scorecard must have the aggregation type of "Source Data". This is not the default, so it is very common that this is the problem.

3. The user doesn't have drillthrough permission on the cube. It's a little-known fact that PPS connects to Analysis Services through the "Application Pool" user rather than the logged in user by default. See the post on PPS Security for more details on this.

Note that scorecards don't show Drillthrough when a user is in the dashboard designer.

We don't support Actions on scorecards yet, but that should be coming in a future version.

In Analytic Grids and Charts:

Drillthrough is available, and also issue #3 mentioned above for scorecards can also be a problem. #1 and #2 are not an issue for analytic reports.

All 3 types of Actions are available (URL, Drillthrough, and Reporting Services). The HTML actions that used to be supported by Analysis Services, but that were deprecated in AS2005 are not available.

Also, very importantly, only cell-level actions are supported. So actions that you have attached to dimensions, members, the entire cube, etc. will not show up in the product.

Both Drillthrough and Actions are available in deployed dashboards and the dashboard designer.

I've noticed that SSAS actions are not available in Excel Services worksheets published in PPS.  Is this an issue with Excel Services or PPS?

Excel Services reports are rendered via Excel Services so unfortunately there isn't anything we can do in PPS to add this capability.

I was testing this out using the preview site and received this error: Cannot show details for this cell because both the row and column must have a selection. What am I missing?

Check to ensure that you have the latest service pack, SP2, we had a fix for this somewhere along the way.

I have a drillthrough action setup in my cube.  It works perfectly fine with Excel Services but it is disabled in my Performance Point dashboard.  I have the user role set on the cube to Drillthrough and Local Cube.  What am I missing?

I have drill through actions set up on all my measures in the cube.  I've created PPS analytic grids that are associated to multi selectable date filters.  When I choose for example 1 month (JUL-2010), the addtional actions menu item is enabled and I 'm able access the sub menu items within.  When I choose  more then 1 month like say 2 months(JUN-2010,JUL-2010), the Additional Actions menu item is disabled.  When I change  the date filter back to 1 month as my selection or the 'All' member.  The Additional Actions menu item is enabled again.  Am I missing something or this a limitation of the Addtional Actions to only one date member?

For scorecard drillthrough, I'm not sure if I understand, or agree, with reason #1 "The cell in the scorecard is not an Analysis Services cell. It might be an aggregation that is computed by the scorecard itself, in which case there is not really a cube cell to drillthrough to." First, when you apply an SSAS filter, as you do in the WHERE clause, SSAS performs the aggregation, not the scorecard. You can verify this behavior in SSMS or ANY other cube browser. Second, the Show Details is showing us the leaf level data used to come up with the number we're seeing. There are no aggregates, and users don't want aggregates, they want leaf.  So what if two members were used to calculate the final number? Show both sets of leaf data. You're doing that anyway...leaf decendants of whatever single member was selected, or the All member if nothing was selected. I just don't see how this is by design. You're basically saying that one of most common business scenarios isn't supported. To business users, this is a bug regardless of how Microsoft classifies it.
