The 10/20/30 Rule of PowerPoint
As it turns out many people find my blog by searching for this rule, so I thought I’d make a post that’s more on target for people to find. This is a great concept and especially relevant for teams headed to the Imagine Cup US finals in Cambridge, MA next week. Is there an official rule here? I have no idea, but the understanding I have comes from Guy Kawasaki.
10 – A PowerPoint should have no more than 10 slides
20 – A presentation should last no more than 20 minutes
30 – The font should be no less than 30 pt
Guy Kawasaki adds that these are the 10 points to cover for Venture Capitalists, but I’d argue they are relevant to most audiences you face:
- Problem
- Your solution
- Business model
- Underlying magic/technology
- Marketing and sales
- Competition
- Team
- Projections and milestones
- Status and timeline
- Summary and call to action

I think it depends. Sometimes, you may make a photo album to share with others. At this point, plenty of funny or happy pictures with sound can be compiled in a single presentation to disperse out.
