Ramping up on the job: Meeting with Co-workers 1:1

I work on a team that's geographically dispersed -- we live all over the US.   That makes it a little harder to jump into things.  They're all doing different activities in different cities and may be traveling, working from home or at a local office.  I'd like to figure out what everyone is doing, let them know that I'm back and catch up on what they've been up to, so I set up 1:1s with everyone on my team.  I think I scared my manager by doing this, but my coworkers have seemed happy enough to chat.

I've set up the meetings with the following in mind:

  • Keep it short and sweet.  Try not to waste their time.
  • Take notes so that I can reference them later.
  • Have SOME sort of goals for the meetings.
  • Only have one or two per day.  I don't want to get tired of talking to people so that some of my coworkers get a cranky exhausted me.  The meetings end up as one of the highlights of my day now.
  • Don't harass them.  (This is my curt summary of the request from my manager.)

I'm about halfway through the 1:1s and I'm very happy that I scheduled them.  Working remotely, there are a lot of things that I wouldn't have known about without talking to each team member.  It's also just been great to catch up personally.
