Network Monitor free at last

For years it has been a pain to collect network traces for Microsoft PSS to analyse. Either it was never easy to work out how to install the Network Monitor that may (or may not) have come with the operating system or, if you didn't have SMS, you had to download a time-bombed version from an FTP site.

Last month Microsoft released Network Monitor 3 in an easy-to-digest format [[followed by 3.1 in July 2007, 3.2 in September 2008, 3.3 in April 2009]].

The interface has been completely redesigned and I'm on a steep learning curve to get used to it. Manipulation of the captured data is now with typed queries as opposed to the older method of selecting information with the mouse. I would have preferred both in version 3 - the GUI method was nice and easy for the simple filtering that I tended to do and I don't think I will use the power and flexibility of the text querying to really become familiar with it.

Luckily, Network Monitor 3 happily co-exists with version 1 or 2.
