Call for Papers: 2008 Microsoft eScience Workshop

https://research.microsoft.com/workshops/escience2008/

The use of computers in scientific research creates challenges even as it expands the realm of the possible. Many of these challenges are common across research disciplines and areas of endeavor.  Insights gained in one area of science can act as a catalyst for change and accelerate discovery in many others.

This cross-disciplinary workshop will bring together scientists from diverse research disciplines and give them the opportunity to share their experiences of how computing is shaping their work.  The goal is to discover new insights into facilitating scientific discovery. The focus will be on discussion of the computing technologies that enable scalable solutions that address scientific grand challenges.  The event is being held in conjunction with the Fourth Annual IEEE eScience Conference .

Workshop Theme: Accelerating Time to Scientific Discovery

The 2008 Microsoft eScience Workshop invites 1-2 page position papers from all areas of eScience and e-Research including:

  • Computational enablement of scientific research in life sciences, biomedical computing, environment, energy, and other scientific grand challenges
  • Knowledge discovery and merging datasets
  • Large-scale scientific data analysis, mining, and visualization
  • High-performance computing in science
  • Dissemination of scientific literature/results, the curation, finding and sharing of data
  • Scientific sensors, data-gathering tools and technologies
  • Collaboration/workflow tools and technologies
  • The role of semantics and ontologies in scientific discovery

Papers submitted should be 3 pages maximum, 10pt. font or larger, double-spaced, in either Microsoft Word or PDF format. Submissions will be peer reviewed.

A final program of selected submissions will be published and distributed to all attendees. For every accepted paper/poster at least one of the authors must register and attend the Microsoft eScience workshop (IEEE eScience conference attendance is optional).  Papers selected for presentation will be included in a DVD sent to attendees following the workshop.  A signed release form is required for all presenters so that we may freely distribute the workshop materials.

  • Paper submission opens: July 1st, 2008
  • Paper submission closes: August 15th, 2008 (noon, PDT)
  • Reviewer deadline: September 15th, 2008
  • Notification of acceptance: October, 2008
  • eScience Workshop: December 7-9th, 2008
  • IEEE eScience Conference: December 7-12th, 2008
