Boys and Girls Club kids get their tech on!

Last Thursday and Friday, April 21-22, more than 60 kids participated in the CyberSummit, an annual event hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, and open to clubs in and around Boston, that enables kids to learn about and interact with new technologies. Now in its 11th year, CyberSummit includes hands-on workshops with cutting-edge technology, as well as team building opportunities and challenges from creating digital music, to building 3D scale models, and filming and editing an original video.

“What I think is so great about CyberSummit is that it brings learning to life for kids. Children learn about concepts in the classroom, but with this event they are able to have a hands-on experience with things like technology and video music production, architecture and engineering,“ said Joshua Kraft, Nicholas President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Boston. “Providing kids with interactive experiences makes it exciting and really leaves an impression. This year was especially successful – the kids were more engaged than we’ve ever seen.”

Microsoft volunteers ran sessions including Game Making with Kodu, and a Windows Mobile workshop. Additionally the kids participated in an internet safety workshop where they learned how to combat cyber-bullying.

This was Microsoft’s third year sponsoring the event and the Boston office is pleased to be part of such an important initiative. “We’re so grateful for everything Microsoft does to make CyberSummit happen,” Kraft noted. In addition to the financial and volunteer support provided, Microsoft donated a flat screen TV with Kinect for Xbox to Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, and also Zune and mp4 players for raffle.
