The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an independent not-for-profit organization helping to lead the improvement of health care throughout the world.  Founded in 1991 and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, IHI works to accelerate improvement by building the will for change, cultivating promising concepts for improving patient care, and helping health care systems put those ideas into action.

The Institute helps accelerate change in health care by cultivating promising concepts for improving patient care and turning those ideas into action.  IHI aims to improve the lives of patients, the health of communities, and the joy of the health care workforce by focusing on an ambitious set of goals adapted from the Institute of Medicine's six improvement aims for the health care system:

  • Safety
  • Effectiveness
  • Patient-Centeredness
  • Timeliness
  • Efficiency
  • Equity

They call their list of goals the "No Needless List":

  • No needless deaths
  • No needless pain or suffering
  • No helplessness in those served or serving
  • No unwanted waiting
  • No waste
  • No one left out

edefinelogo

eDefine is a Microsoft Partner that offers internet, intranet and extranet, application design, development and deployment services. eDefine works with all types of clients ranging from well-established healthcare companies to small start-ups. They focus on developing applications that help to fundamentally re-define inefficient and high cost business processes for our clients.

The Challenge

During IHI’s 5 Million Lives Campaigns, health care providers told IHI they wanted help making sense of the many complex and competing demands hospitals face.  The 5 Million Lives Campaign was a voluntary initiative to protect patients from five million incidents of medical harm. Health care providers told IHI they wanted help making sense of the many complex and competing demands hospitals face:

  • Reduce mortality rates
  • Reduce harm rates
  • Increase quality of care

In response, IHI working with eDefine, designed, implemented and launched the IHI Improvement Map, an online tool that distills the best knowledge available on the key process improvements that will lead to better outcomes for patients.

The Solution

The IHI Improvement Map is a Silverlight 3 based online tool that distills the best knowledge available on the key process improvements that will lead to better outcomes for patients. The tool makes it easy for hospitals to find, understand and adopt best practices.
