.NET Framework 3.0 hotfix (KB932471) will fail to install if .NET Framework 3.5 beta 2 is installed

Recently, we have been hearing reports from customers who have installed the .NET Framework 3.5 beta 2 and then visited Windows Update and were offered .NET Framework 3.0 hotfix KB932471, but it continually fails to install.

The .NET Framework 3.5 contains an updated version of the .NET Framework 3.0, and that updated version of 3.0 contains this hotfix already.  Unfortunately, there was some incorrect detection information in the Windows Update logic that is used to decide whether or not to offer this hotfix to a system.

If you have the .NET Framework 3.5 beta 2 or later installed and run into issues while trying to install KB932471 (either from Windows Update or by downloading it directly from the Microsoft Download Center), you can safely ignore this failure and just skip installing this hotfix since the equivalent fix is already a part of the version of the .NET Framework 3.5 that you have on your system.

The Windows Update authoring logic that is causing this error is in the process of being fixed, and will be refreshed on the live Windows Update site in the near future.

Meanwhile it's october 24th and still no fix. I am not willing to believe fixing such a trivial problem should take over a month.

    Hi RobIII - I'm sorry for the continued hassle that this is causing for you.  I don't work on the team specifically responsible for this Windows Update authoring logic, but based on my past experience, it might be getting delayed because Windows Update prioritizes the release of critical updates and security fixes before non-critical bug fixes like this one.  I know that the team that owns this authoring logic is aware of the issue and tested a fix to the authoring logic, but I'm not sure when it will be live on WU.  In the meantime, you can either ignore this package when it is offered to you or skip it when you install updates.

    Hmm I installed Framework 3.5 final and still get the update offered. It does 'install' but then later the update is offered again. Guess the install logic has not changed? (Internal WSUS)

    I installed Visual Studio 2008 first (without 2003 or 2005 installed and I get this error.

    Hi Jsinnott - Visual Studio 2008 setup includes the .NET Framework 3.5 as a prerequisite.  The .NET Framework 3.5 in turn includes the .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 as a prerequisite.  This error will happen after a system has the .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 installed. I have reported this issue to the team that owns this hotfix several times, and unfortunately it has not yet been removed from Windows Update.  Hopefully this will happen soon, but in the meantime, you can simply ignore the prompt to install KB932471 because the fix that it contains is already a part of the .NET Framework 3.0 SP1.
