Using the IE10 Blocker Toolkit

In this blog post, we just want to share quickly, what you will get in the IE10 Blocker Toolkit. There are a few notes we want to highlight that we hope clarify the right process for IT admins using the Toolkit.

The IE10 Blocker Toolkit applies to Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and higher.

In the IE10 blocker toolkit you will see only 3 files and these are:

IE10_Blocker.adm - The Administrative Template (.adm file) allows administrators to import the new Group Policy settings to block or unblock automatic delivery of Internet Explorer 10 into their Group Policy environment, and to use Group Policy to centrally execute the action across systems in their environment.

IE10_Blocker.cmd - The script accepts one of two command line options (block and unblock) and creates or removes the registry key that controls whether Internet Explorer 10 is offered automatically to the system (via Automatic Updates scans).

IE10_BlockerHelp.htm - The Blocker Help file includes the same information found at the IE10 Blocker Toolkit download page. This is helpful for scenarios where you may not have internet access and you have already downloaded the toolkit.

The important item to know is that if you used the Blocker Toolkit to block Internet Explorer 9 from being installed as a high-priority update, you need to use the Internet Explorer 10 version of the Blocker Toolkit to block Internet Explorer 10 from being installed. There are different registry keys used to block or unblock automatic delivery of Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10.

The Registry location where the Blocker Script or the Group Policy modifies is under:

Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Setup\10.0

Key value
name:
DoNotAllowIE10

Value

Result

Key is not defined

Distribution is not blocked.

0

Distribution is not blocked.

1

Distribution is blocked.

Everything else is implemented the same way as described in our previous blog.
