Repair client deployment issues

Applies To: Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

This section explains how to troubleshoot client deployment problems.

Problem   Users cannot access https://connect to join client computers to the domain.

Solution   Troubleshoot the network connection.

To troubleshoot the network connection

  1. From the Windows SBS 2011 Standard Console, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  2. Verify that World Wide Web Publishing Service is running. If it is not, to start it, click World Wide Web Publishing Service, and then click Start the service.

  3. Open a Command Prompt window by doing one of the following:

    • From a client computer that is running Windows 7, click Start, in the Search programs and files field, type cmd, and then in Programs, click cmd.

    • From a client computer that is running Windows Vista®, click Start, in the Start Search field, type cmd, and then in Programs, click cmd.

    • From a client computer that is running Windows XP, click Start, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

  4. Type ping <ServerName>, where <ServerName> is the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard.

  5. If you still cannot access your Windows SBS 2011 Standard server, continue troubleshooting the network connection as follows:

    • From a client computer that is running Windows 7, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet, click Network and Sharing Center, click Troubleshoot problems, and then click Internet connections.

    • From a client computer that is running Windows Vista, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Sharing Center, and then click Diagnose and Repair.

    • From a client computer that is running Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, click Network Connections, right-click the network adapter, and then click Repair.

Problem   New users cannot access Windows SBS 2011 Standard settings such as Internet Explorer® Favorites or the Internet Explorer home page.

Solution   Check the following areas:

  • Services that are running

  • Group Policy settings

  • Network issues

  • User ID is listed in the Windows SBS 2011 Standard network

To check the services that are running

  1. Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard.

  2. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  3. Verify that Windows SBS Manager is started. If it is not running, to start it, click Windows SBS Manager, and then click Start the service.

To check Group Policy settings

  1. To verify that settings for the client computer are set in Group Policy, open a Command Prompt window, navigate to C:\users\<UserName>, where <UserName> is the name of the user account, type gpupdate, and then press ENTER.

    A message is displayed to indicate that the Group Policy setting is being updated.

  2. The Group Policy setting can take up to 90 minutes before it is in effect.

    When the update is complete, the following messages are displayed:

    • User Policy update has completed successfully.

    • Computer Policy update has completed successfully.

  3. If the issue is not resolved, try rebooting the client computer.

To check for network issues

  1. Open a Command Prompt window from the client computer (click Start, type cmd, and then press ENTER).

  2. Type ping <ServerName>, where <ServerName> is the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard.

  3. If you still cannot connect to your Windows SBS 2011 Standard server, continue troubleshooting network issues as follows:

    • In Windows 7, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet, click Network and Sharing Center, click Troubleshoot problems, and then click Internet Connections.

    • In Windows Vista, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Sharing Center, and then click Diagnose and Repair.

    • In Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, click Network Connections, right-click the network adapter, and then click Repair.

To verify that the user account exists in the Windows Small Business Server 2011 network

  1. Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard, and then open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. Click Users and Groups, and then click Users.

  3. Verify that the user account exists. If it does not exist, to create it, click Add a new user account, and then complete the steps in the wizard.

Problem   A user cannot see a computer in the Connect to a Computer feature in Remote Web Workplace.

Solution   Verify that the user has rights to the computer.

To verify that a user has rights to a computer

  1. Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard, and then open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. Click Users and Groups, and then click Users.

  3. Double-click the user account, and then in the Properties dialog box, click Computers.

  4. Verify that Remote Access is set to Yes for the user account, and then click OK.

Problem   A user cannot connect to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard or to the Internet.

Solution   Run the Fix My Network Wizard.

To run the Fix My Network Wizard

  1. Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard, and then open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. Click Network, click Connectivity, and then, in Tasks, click Fix my network.

  3. Complete the wizard.
