Repair client deployment issues

This section explains how to troubleshoot client deployment problems.
Problem Users cannot access https://connect to join client computers to the domain.
Solution Troubleshoot the network connection.
To troubleshoot the network connection
From the Windows SBS 2008 console, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
Verify that World Wide Web Publishing Service is running. If it is not, start it: Click World Wide Web Publishing Service, and then click Start the service.
Open a Command Prompt window by doing one of the following:
From a client computer that is running Windows Vista, click Start, in the Start Search field, type cmd, and then in Programs, click cmd.
From a client computer that is running Windows XP, click Start, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
Type
ping <ServerName>
, where <ServerName> is the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2008.If the problem is not solved, try repairing the network connection by doing one of the following:
From a client computer that is running Windows Vista, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Sharing Center, and then click Diagnose and Repair.
From a client computer that is running Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, click Network Connections, right-click the network adapter, and then click Repair.
Problem New users cannot access Windows SBS 2008 settings such as Internet Explorer Favorites, the Internet Explorer home page, or the Outlook 2003 .prf file.
Solution Check the following four areas:
Services that are running
Group Policy
Network issues
User ID exists in the Windows SBS 2008 network
To check the services that are running
Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2008.
Click Start, click Administrative Services, and then click Services.
Verify that Windows SBS Manager is started. If it is not running, start it: Click Windows SBS Manager, and then click Start the service.
To check Group Policy
Verify that the client settings are set through Group Policy: Open a Command Prompt window, navigate to C:\users\<UserName>, where <UserName> is the name of the client computer account, type
gpupdate
, and then press ENTER.A message is displayed to indicate that the Group Policy setting is being updated.
The Group Policy setting can take up to 90 minutes before it is in effect. Verify that 90 minutes have passed.
When the update is complete, the following messages are displayed:
User Policy update has completed successfully.
Computer Policy update has completed successfully.
If the issue is not resolved, try rebooting the client computer.
To check for network issues
Open a Command Prompt window: From the client computer, click Start, type
cmd
, and then press ENTER.Type
ping <ServerName>
, where <ServerName> is the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2008.If the problem is not repaired, try repairing the network connection:
In Windows Vista, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Sharing Center, and then click Diagnose and Repair.
In Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, click Network Connections, right-click the network adapter, and then click Repair.
To verify that the user account exists in the Windows Small Business Server 2008 network
Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2008, and then open the Windows SBS Console.
Click Users and Groups, and then click Users.
Verify that the user account exists. If it does not exist, create it: Click Add a new user account, and then complete the steps in the wizard.
Problem A user cannot see a computer in the Connect to a Computer feature in Remote Web Workplace.
Solution Verify that the user has rights to the computer.
To verify that a user has rights to a computer
Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2008, and then open the Windows SBS Console.
Click Users and Groups, and then click Users.
Double-click the user account, and then, on the Properties dialog box, click Computers.
Verify that Remote Access is set to Yes for the user account, and then click OK.
Problem A user cannot connect to the server that is running Windows SBS 2008 or to the Internet.
Solution Run the Fix My Network Wizard.
To run the Fix My Network Wizard
Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2008, and then open the Windows SBS Console.
Click Network, click Connectivity, and then, in Tasks, click Fix my network.
Complete the wizard.
