Repair Windows Live OneCare

This section includes information about how to troubleshoot and manually repair Windows Live OneCare for Server on your server that is running Windows SBS 2008.

Problems   Windows Live OneCare for Server has one or more of the following issues:

  • In the Network Essentials Summary, the Security status is Critical.

  • On the Reports tab, the Security status is Critical.

  • On the Security tab, the Server virus and spyware protection status is Critical.

  • On the Details pane, the signature files for Windows Live OneCare for Server are out of date.

  • In the notification area, the icon for Windows Live OneCare for Server is red and the hover text says Status: At risk.

Solution   Assess the status of the services for Windows Live OneCare for Server, restart the services that are not running, and then assess the status of your Internet connection. If you do not have an Internet connection, run the Fix My Network Wizard.

You can manually recover Windows Live OneCare for Server by returning to a previous configuration of Windows SBS 2008.

Manual recovery of Windows Live OneCare for Server on your Windows Small Business Server 2008 network

You can recover Windows Live OneCare for Server on your Windows SBS 2008 network by uninstalling the application and then reinstalling it. You can reinstall it directly from the Windows Live OneCare Web site, or from your server that is running Windows SBS 2008.

Note

It is recommended that you use the Microsoft Web site to install Windows Live OneCare for Server, to ensure that it includes the most recent updates. If you cannot connect to the Internet to download the file, skip to “To recover Windows Live OneCare for Server if you do not have Internet access.”

To recover Windows Live OneCare for Server by using the Web site

If Windows Live OneCare for Server was not installed as part of the original Windows SBS 2008 installation, skip to Step 6 in this procedure.

On the server that is running Windows SBS 2008, click **Start**, click **Control Panel**, click **Programs**, and then click **Programs and Features**.
  1. Click Windows Live OneCare, and then click Uninstall/Change.

  2. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  3. In the Uninstall Windows Live OneCare Wizard, click Uninstall, and then finish the wizard.

  4. Restart the server that is running Windows SBS 2008.

  5. Go to the Windows Live OneCare Web site at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=137345.

  6. Click Install the 120-day free trial of Windows Live OneCare for Server, and then click Save.

  7. Browse to a location where you want to save the SetupOneCare.exe file, and then click Save.

  8. From the location where you saved the SetupOneCare.exe file, double-click it to run it.

  9. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  10. Select your language, and then click Next.

  11. Read the Terms of Use. If you accept them, click Next.

    You might need to wait for updates to be downloaded and installed before you can proceed.

  12. When the installation is complete, apply a Windows Live ID, and then establish a Windows Live OneCare Circle. For more information about how to create a Windows Live ID, see the Microsoft Web site at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=139474.

To recover Windows Live OneCare for Server if you do not have Internet access

If Windows Live OneCare for Server was not installed as part of the original Windows SBS 2008 installation, skip to Step 6 in this procedure.

On the server that is running Windows SBS 2008, click **Start**, click **Control Panel**, click **Programs**, and then click **Programs and Features**.
  1. Click Windows Live OneCare, and then click Uninstall/Change.

  2. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  3. In the Uninstall Windows Live OneCare Wizard, click Uninstall, and then finish the wizard.

  4. Restart the server that is running Windows SBS 2008.

  5. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.

  6. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  7. At the command prompt, type CD C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin\CMPNENTS\ONECARE, and then press ENTER.

  8. At the command prompt, type OCSetup.exe /OEM /b SBSOneCareServer /vendor MicrosoftSBS, and then press ENTER.

  9. You must restart the computer to start using Windows Live OneCare for Server.

  10. Finalize the installation by doing the following:

    1. On the Windows SBS 2008 Console, click the Home tab, and then click Help protect your server with Windows Live OneCare for Server. If this option is not listed, click the Windows Live OneCare for Server icon on the notification area.

    2. In the Windows Live OneCare for Server popup window, click Update OneCare.

    3. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

    4. Select your language, and then click Next.

      You might need to wait for updates to be downloaded and installed before you can proceed.

  11. When the installation is complete, apply a Windows Live ID, and then establish a Windows Live OneCare Circle. For more information about how to create a Windows Live ID, see the Microsoft Web site at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=139474.

To confirm that the installation succeeded

  1. Open the Windows SBS 2008 Console.

  2. Click the Security tab.

  3. Verify that Server virus and spyware protection is shown in Security Essentials, that the status is OK, and that the source is Windows Live OneCare for Server.
