Open ports on the firewall

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

When you install line-of-business applications or other programs and services, you may need to open additional ports in the server firewall.

Note

You must be a network administrator to complete this procedure.

To open a port in the server firewall for an installed program

  1. Open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. On the navigation bar, click Network, and then click Connectivity.

  3. Right-click Server firewall, and then click View firewall properties.

  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Manage rules.

  5. Click Allow a program through Windows Firewall.

  6. On the Exceptions tab, click Add program.

  7. Locate and click the installed program, and then click OK.

  8. The name of the program is listed in the Program or port text box, with the check box selected. Click OK.

To open a port in the firewall settings on the server

  1. Open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. On the navigation bar, click Network, and then click Connectivity.

  3. Right-click Server firewall, and then click View firewall properties.

  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Manage rules.

  5. Click Allow a program through Windows Firewall.

  6. On the Exceptions tab, click Add port.

  7. In the text boxes, type a name for the port that you want to open and the port number, click TCP or UDP, and then click OK.

  8. Verify that the name of the port is listed in the Program or port text box, with the check box selected. Click OK.

Note

To open the Windows SBS Console, click Start, click All Programs, click Windows Small Business Server, click Windows SBS Console, and then click Continue in the User Account Control dialog box.
