Connect to a printer on a NetWare server

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To connect to a printer on a NetWare server

Open Printers and Faxes.
Double-click Add Printer, and then click Next.
Click A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer, and then click Next.
Click Connect to this printer.
In Name, type the name of a printer in the following format:

**\\servername\**sharename

Or, to find the NetWare printer in Shared printers, click Next.
Follow the remaining instructions in the Add Printer Wizard to finish connecting to the NetWare printer.

The icon for that printer appears in your Printers and Faxes folder.

Important

The IPX/SPX protocol is not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition and the 64-bit versions of the Windows Server 2003 family. Due to its dependency on the IPX/SPX protocol, Client Service for NetWare is not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition and the 64-bit versions of the Windows Server 2003 family.

Notes

To open Printers and Faxes, click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
To connect to a printer on a NetWare server, you must have Client Service for NetWare and NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol (NWLink) installed. For information on how to do this, see Related Topics.
If a printer driver is not available locally for a NetWare printer, you are prompted to install one.
