Verify the Remote Installation Services configuration

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To verify the Remote Installation Services configuration

  1. Make sure you have the installation CDs available. You might be prompted for them during the process of verifying the server.

  2. Go to the Remote Installation Services (RIS) server you want to verify, or use Remote Desktop for Administration to connect to the RIS server you want to verify.

  3. Open Active Directory Users and Computers.

  4. In the console tree, right-click the RIS server whose configuration you want to verify.

    Where?

    • Active Directory Users and Computers/Applicable domain/Applicable organizational unit (such as Computers)/Applicable RIS server
  5. Click Properties, and then in the Properties dialog box, click the Remote Install tab.

  6. Click Verify Server. The Check Server Wizard opens.

Notes

  • To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure.

  • This topic does not apply to Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.

  • To open Active Directory Users and Computers, click Start, click Run, type dsa.msc, and then click OK. For information about creating a shortcut so you can easily open Active Directory Users and Computers with runas, see Related Topics.

  • Use Verify Server if the server seems to be failing or is behaving inconsistently, or if you need to restore a RIS volume from backup.

  • If you need to restore a RIS volume from backup, verify the server configuration before you restore the volume.

  • You can only use Verify Server locally on a RIS server, or by connecting to that server through Remote Desktop for Administration. You cannot use Verify Server if you are performing RIS administration tasks from a remote server.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
