Running the Remote Installation Services Setup Wizard

Before running the Remote Installation Services Setup Wizard, you must ensure that you have an account in the Administrators group on the server on which you want to run the wizard. You should also be sure to complete all prerequisite steps outlined in Checklist: Installing Remote Installation Services.

You can select Remote Installation Services (RIS) as an optional component after completing Setup. To do this, use Add or Remove programs in Control Panel. You can also install RIS during Setup if Setup is run using an unattended answer file. In this case, after you have selected RIS, the Setup Wizard guides you through the necessary steps of installation and configuration. For complete instructions on installing RIS, see Install Remote Installation Services.

The Setup Wizard presents the following options:

  • The first time the wizard is run, you will be prompted for a location for the \RemoteInstall directory tree. This location must be on an NTFS file system volume and cannot be on the system volume or boot volume.

  • Respond to client computers requesting service

Select this option to enable the RIS server to begin responding to client computers. Clear this option to prevent the RIS server from responding.

  • Do not respond to unknown client computers

Select this option if you want this RIS server to respond only to known (prestaged) client computers. Clear this option if you want this RIS server to respond to any client computer requesting remote installation.

Prestaging can be one element of your security strategy for RIS. This is because you can use prestaging to prevent unknown client computers from being installed through RIS. For information about security considerations related to PXE architecture and RIS, see PXE architecture, RIS, and security considerations.

  • The Setup Wizard prompts you for the location of the installation files. This can be either the compact disc or a network location that contains the installation files.

  • The Setup Wizard prompts you for a directory name to which the installation files should be copied on the RIS server. You should name the directory something that represents the operating system you are copying--for example, WindowsXP.pro.

  • The Setup Wizard prompts you for a friendly description and Help text describing this operating system installation image. The friendly description and Help text is displayed to users during the client installation process on a remote boot-enabled client computer. Enter a description of the operating system installation choice. One example of a friendly description would be "Windows XP Professional for Sales Staff." The Help text is displayed when the user selects the friendly description within the Client Installation Wizard.

  • The Setup Wizard displays the summary information of the setup process. To change any of this information, click Back.
