Get details about objects and counters

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To get details about objects and counters

  1. Open Performance.

  2. Double-click Performance Logs and Alerts, and then click Counter Logs.

  3. In the details pane, double-click the counter log.

  4. Click the Add Objects button to open the Add Objects dialog box or click the Add Counters button to open the Add Counters dialog box.

  5. In the Add Objects dialog box, select Performance objects, click an object, then click Explain.

  6. In the Add Counters dialog box, select Performance object, click an object, and in Performance counters, click a counter and then click Explain.

Notes

  • To open Performance, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Performance.

  • Clicking Explain opens a pop-up window that contains information about the selected object or counter. For more information on counters, including detailed descriptions of how each counter is calculated and guidelines on using counters to diagnose performance problems, see the Performance Counter Help Reference at the Microsoft Windows Resource Kits Web site.
