Start Setup for a new installation by starting the computer from the CD

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To start Setup for a new installation by starting the computer from the CD

  1. Determine whether the computer on which you want to start Setup can be started from the CD-ROM drive, and whether you want to perform a new installation (not an upgrade). Continue only if both are true.

  2. Insert the CD in the drive, and then restart the computer.

  3. Follow the instructions for your operating system to boot the computer from the CD.

  4. Wait for Setup to display a dialog box, and then follow the Setup instructions.

Notes

  • This method applies only if you want to perform a new installation, not an upgrade. Using this method, you can perform an installation on a computer that does not have an operating system, although you can also use this method on computers that have operating systems.

  • Setup works in several stages, prompting for information, copying files, and restarting.

  • For information about unattended Setup, see Related Topics.

  • If you have a mass storage controller (such as a SCSI, RAID, or Fibre Channel adapter) for your hard disk, see Related Topics for information about how to ensure that the controller driver file is available to the Setup program.

  • If you have specialized hardware requiring a custom hardware abstraction layer (HAL) file supplied by your computer manufacturer, see Related Topics for information about how to make the HAL file available during Setup.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
