Backing Up the Component Database
You should back up your component database before you install a new feature pack. This allows you to use the latest component definitions for your new configurations, and provides you with the ability to restore your old database later, so you can maintain and update any configurations based on the previous version of the component database.
There are several common scenarios for which you should back up your component database:
- You are installing a new service pack. For example, you want to back up your Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 2 component database before you install Windows® XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007. This will allow you to update any configurations created with the Service Pack 2 component database later.
- You need to update a configuration that was created with a previous version of the Windows XP Embedded component database. For example, you already have Windows® XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007 installed, and you have just received a QFE for Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 2 that you need to apply to a configuration that you created with the Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 2 component database.
**Note **You should also back up your repository. Because the repository can be quite large, use a backup utility to select the appropriate data, storage media, and location. For more information, see Backing Up the Repository.
To back up the component database
Stop your database server services.
If you use MSDE, from the Start menu, choose Run, and then type Services.msc. Choose MSSQLSERVER and then choose Stop.
- or -
If you use Microsoft SQL Server, from the Start menu, choose All Programs, choose Microsoft SQL Server, choose Service Manager, and then choose Stop.
Open Windows Explorer, and navigate to the $:\Windows Embedded Data folder.
From the Windows Embedded Data folder, copy both MantisSQLDB_log.LDF and MantisSQLDB_Data.mdf to another folder on this computer, a network location, or other storage media, as backup copies.
Access your database service as you did in step 1, and then select Start.
