Change settings through the boot configuration menu (Compact 2013)

Similar to the BIOS settings on a physical computer, you can interrupt the boot loader and modify the underlying settings of the virtual device. When you start the virtual device, wait for the configuration menu prompts, then press the spacebar to open the configuration menu.

The following table describes the options on the main configuration menu and what each option controls. Enter the menu by presses the space bar during the prompts.

Show Current Settings

See the current settings on the virtual device. After it displays the current settings for a few seconds, the boot loader returns to the Main menu.

Select Boot Source

Choose whether the virtual device boots from the network or from its local drive.

Select KITL Device

Choose which Kernel Independent Transport Layer (KITL) device you want the virtual device to use.

Network Settings

Configure how your virtual device connects to a TCP/IP network.

Display Settings

Change the size, resolution, and pixel depth of the virtual device’s display.

Debug Port Settings

Change the COM port and baud rate for the debug port or disable debugging completely.

Save Settings

Save the current settings (as shown on the Show Current Settings menu) to persistent memory.

If you save your changes, the new settings will persist across reboots. If you do not save your changes, the virtual device will revert to the previously-saved settings the next time it reboots.

Exit the configuration menu and return the to boot process.

Show Current Settings (1)

The Show Current Settings screen displays the information in the following table.

Boot source

Shows whether the virtual device will boot from a local drive (called the boot drive) or from its network adapter.

KITL device

Shows whether the virtual device uses its local drive (called the boot drive) or its network adapter for KITL communication.

KITL config

Shows the current KITL status (enabled/disabled), KITL mode (interrupt/poll), and VMINI status (enabled/disabled).

DHCP

Shows whether DHCP is enabled or disabled.

Display

Shows the current resolution and bit depth of the display, along with the viewable screen size.

Debug Port

Shows the current COM port and bit rate setting of the debug port.

Select Boot Source (2)

Use this menu option to select the boot device. To select an option, type the number beside the option listed in the following table.

Boot Drive

Set the device to boot from the assigned virtual disk.

{Network adapter}

Set the device to boot from the network interface.

If no network adapter is listed, go into your hypervisor and make sure your virtual machine has a legacy network adapter.

Select KITL Device (3)

Select the communication device you want to use for KITL debugging messages. The KITL device is usually the same as the download device.

Network Settings (4)

Use this menu to change the network configuration of the virtual device. To select an option, type the number beside the option listed in the following table.

Show current settings

View the current network settings. The device shows the settings in the following format:

  • KITL state: Shows whether Kernel Independent Transport Layer (KITL) is enabled or disabled.
  • KITL mode: Shows whether KITL currently operates in poll mode or interrupt mode.
  • DHCP: Shows whether DHCP is enabled or disabled.
  • IP address: Shows the current IPv4 address in the format NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN. If DHCP is enabled, the IPv4 address is displayed as 0.0.0.0.
  • VMINI: Shows whether the virtual miniport driver (VMINI) is enabled or disabled.

Enable/disable KITL

Change the KITL state. Type y to enable or disable KITL, or type Enter to leave KITL in its current state.

KITL interrupt/poll mode

Change the KITL mode. Type y to toggle the KITL mode between poll and interrupt, or type Enter to leave KITL in its current mode.

Enable/disable DHCP

Change the DHCP state. Type y to enable or disable DHCP, or type Enter to leave DHCP in its current state.

Set IP address

Enter the IPv4 address you want this virtual device to use. Note that you must disable DHCP in order to use a static IP address.

Enable/disable VMINI

Change the VMINI state. Type y to enable or disable VMINI, or type Enter to leave VMINI in its current state.

Save any changes and return to the main menu.

Display Settings (5)

Use this menu to change the settings of the display.

Show Current Settings (1)

See the current display settings. The device shows the settings in the format shown in the following table.

Shows the current resolution and bit depth.

Shows the current viewable screen size.

Change Display Resolution (2)

The display resolution setting consists of two parts: bit depth or bits per pixel and resolution. After you select the bits per pixel, the device prompts you to select the display resolution. The valid resolution options change based on what you select for bits per pixel.

Change Viewable Display Region (3)

Use this menu to select the amount of the screen the device should use for its viewable display or logical size. If you select Full Screen, the device uses the entire screen for its display.

Choose from the following options. To select an option, type the letter beside the option listed in the following table.

Use this menu to change the settings of the debug port. To select an option, type the number beside the option listed in the following table.
