About This Guide
The Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5 and IIS 7.0 guide provides a consistent structure for addressing the decisions and activities critical to the successful implementation of the IIS 7.5 and IIS 7.0 infrastructure. The guide addresses key issues such as resource, application, and hosting requirements, and the reader can determine the capacity needed from the proposed hosting infrastructure.
This guide takes an application-centric approach to planning IIS: It focuses first on the applications to be hosted by IIS and their requirements; it then applies these applications to specific IIS instances. The Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide for Internet Information Services 7.0 and IIS 7.5 includes the following six-step process:
Step 1: Determine Project Scope. The focus of this step is to determine the project scope and to create a site list.
Step 2: Characterize the Applications. This step involves creating an application inventory.
Step 3: Determine the Windows Server 2008 Edition and Installation Mode. This step guides the organization through the decision between 32-bit and 64-bit as well as the installation mode of the servers.
Step 4: Determine the Location for Configuration and Content Storage. In this step, location and fault tolerance of configuration and content is explored.
Step 5: Determine the Fault Tolerance for the Infrastructure. This step involves evaluating the fault-tolerance options for the web servers.
Step 6: Determine the Required Server Resources. This step determines the size and number of servers required to serve the applications in scope as well as their scalability and fault-tolerance requirements.
