How to Create a Virtual Machine with a Blank Virtual Hard Disk
Aplica-se a: Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1
This topic describes how to create a virtual machine from a blank virtual hard disk. You can either install the operating system after creating the virtual machine or configure the virtual machine to start from an ISO image.
Considerations
When you create a virtual machine from a blank virtual hard disk:
You must configure the virtual machine so that you can install an operating system from a system CD, from an ISO image file in the library, or if the network adapter on the host computer supports network service boots, through a network service boot. For more information, see the Install an Operating System on the Virtual Machine section later in this topic.
We recommend that you install virtualization guest services (such as Virtual Machine Additions or Integration Components) on the virtual machine.
Procedure
To create a virtual machine from a blank virtual hard disk:
In the Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console, in Virtual Machines view, click New virtual machine.
Complete the New Virtual Machine Wizard.
Wizard Page | Action |
---|---|
Select Source |
Select the Create the new virtual machine with a blank hard disk option. |
Virtual Machine Identity |
|
Configure Hardware |
Configure the blank virtual hard disk for the virtual machine.
To configure additional hardware for the virtual machine, use the following procedures:
|
Select Destination |
Choose between two options:
|
Select Host (Host placement only) |
Review the rating for each host to determine the most suitable host on which to deploy this virtual machine. Dica If many hosts are listed, you can use the Host group, Look for, or Group by fields to display a smaller set of potential hosts. All hosts that are available for placement are given a rating of 0-5 stars based on their suitability to host the virtual machine. The host ratings are based on the virtual machine's hardware and resource requirements and expected resource usage. They are also based on placement settings that you can customize for VMM or for individual virtual machine deployments. The ratings are recommendations. You can select any host that has the required disk space and memory available. For more information about how VMM rates hosts, see How Virtual Machine Manager Rates Hosts. Importante In VMM 2008 R2, for hosts that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 or for ESX Server hosts, the ratings that first appear on the Select Host wizard page are based on a preliminary evaluation by VMM. To see the host rating based on a more thorough evaluation, you must select the host by clicking it.

Select Library Server (Library only) |
Select a library server on which to store the virtual machine. To view additional information about an available library server, select the server in the list, and then use the tab in this section list to view the following information: SAN Explanation -- If a SAN transfer cannot be used to move the virtual machine's files to the library server, this tab lists the conditions that prevent a SAN transfer. |
Select Path |
If you chose Place the virtual machine on a host accept the default virtual machine path on the host to store the files associated with this virtual machine. You can also click the down arrow to select a different path, or click Browse to specify a different path on the host. You can also choose the following options:
The wizard will continue with the Summary page. |
Select Networks (Host placement only) |
Attach the physical network adapters to either Not Connected or to any of the virtual networks on the selected host. |
Additional Properties (Host placement only) |
On the Additional Properties page, accept the default settings or modify these settings as described in How to Configure Automatic Start and Stop Actions for a Virtual Machine |
Summary |
Review the configuration settings. To change settings, click Previous. Optionally, click View Script to view (and copy) the Windows PowerShell script that runs this wizard and performs the conversion. All administrative tasks in VMM can be scripted or performed at the command line. For more information, see Windows PowerShell Scripting in Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=110911). Optionally, select the Start the virtual machine after deploying it on the host check box. Click Create to create the virtual machine. In Jobs view, monitor the job progress as the new virtual machine is created and confirm that the virtual machine is created successfully. If the job fails, review the error message at the bottom of the Jobs pane for information about the cause of the failure and the recommended action to resolve the issue. |
Install an Operating System on the Virtual Machine
This section explains how to configure the virtual machine so that you can install an operating system from a system CD, from an ISO image file in the library, or through a network service boot. For the first two methods, you must configure a virtual DVD drive to attach to a physical CD drive on the host or to the image file. For a network installation, you must configure a virtual network adapter and configure the BIOS settings so that PXE boot is at the top of the Startup order list.
Operating System Requirements for a Virtual Machine
The operating system on the virtual machine must meet the following requirements:
The virtual machine must have a supported operating system installed. For more information, see Supported Operating Systems for Virtual Machines
The boot partition must be the Windows partition.
Procedures
To install from a physical CD, you must map a virtual CD/DVD drive on the virtual machine to the physical CD drive on the host computer, and then insert the CD into the drive.
To prepare to install from a system CD
In Virtual Machines view of the VMM Administrator Console, right-click the virtual machine in the results pane, and then click Properties.
On the Hardware Configuration tab, click DVD on the New toolbar to add a virtual DVD drive to the IDE bus.
In the right pane, click Physical CD/DVD drive, and then select the DVD drive on the host.
To prepare to install from an image file in the library
Copy the image file to a share in the VMM library. For more information, see Adding File-Based Resources to the Library.
To make the file available immediately, refresh the library share.
In the VMM Administrator Console, click Library to display Library view.
In the navigation pane, right-click the share that you copied the image file to, and then click Refresh share.
In the virtual machine properties, configure a virtual DVD drive to connect to the image file:
In Virtual Machines view, right-click the virtual machine in the results pane, and then click Properties.
On the Hardware Configuration tab, click DVD on the New toolbar to add a virtual DVD drive to the IDE bus.
In the Virtual DVD drive area, click Existing image file, and then click Browse to select the image file from the available library resources.
To prepare to install from a network service boot
In Virtual Machines view, right-click the virtual machine in the results pane, and click Properties.
On the Hardware Configuration tab, configure a network connection:
In the Network Adapters area, click a network adapter.
In Connected to, select an external virtual network to use for the network service boot. The list contains all virtual networks that are configured on the host.
In the In the Hardware Profile area, click BIOS, in the Startup order list, click PXE Boot, and then click Up until PXE Boot appears first in the list.
With the virtual machine configured to provide access to the installation medium of choice, you can connect to the virtual machine to install the operating system.
To install the operating system on the virtual machine
In Virtual Machines view, right-click the virtual machine in the results pane, and then click Start.
A virtual machine must be running before you can connect to it.
Right-click the virtual machine again, and then click Connect to virtual machine.
Install the operating system on the virtual machine as you would on a physical computer. On a virtual machine, the startup disk partition must be the Windows partition.
