Farm maintenance is the process of performing tasks to ensure that a farm is running well. Some operations are performed regularly, and some on an as-needed basis. Maintenance tasks are performed by users with farm administrator rights.

Update security and permissions

Much of the permissions work for the system is adding users to existing Active Directory groups, or having site administrators add users to sites. Changing the passwords used for administration accounts is an ongoing farm administrator task.

Action	Change the passwords of administration accounts. Train site administrators how to add users to sites. Document how security and permissions have been updated.

Monitor and tune performance

Consistently monitoring your SharePoint deployment helps you recognize typical performance under varying loads. When you understand your system, you can then tune performance. Establishing a baseline for typical performance can also help you troubleshoot if the system experiences atypical performance.

Action	Configure monitoring. If monitoring shows that system is under strain, tune system performance.

Monitor and tune search

Over time, you may need to adjust your search settings.

Action	Monitor search performance. Adjust search settings if needed.

Add additional servers

As you add users, content, and features to your SharePoint deployment, you may need to add capacity, which is often done by adding servers.

Action	Monitor database size, and Web server performance. If monitoring shows that the system is under strain, add additional servers as appropriate.
