Word Automation Services Scenarios

Word Automation Services was designed to address many different scenarios that involve server-side document conversion. The following is a list of some scenarios:

  • Every month, a manufacturing company generates a large number of invoices that are based on information that is stored in a database. By using a combination of the Office Open XML SDK and Word Automation Services, the company configures an automated process to generate those invoices in a fixed format. The automated process retrieves a document template that is stored on SharePoint Server 2010, merges each record in the database with the template to generate a Microsoft Word document, and then converts the set of generated documents to a fixed-format document, such as a PDF or XPS file.

    Note

For more information about the Office Open XML SDK, see Welcome to the Open XML SDK 2.0.

  • An engineering company creates a workflow to coordinate the approval of project documents by each of the project’s primary contributors. Once the contributors have all approved a given document, the workflow automatically generates a copy of the document in PDF/A format to archive and to submit to compliance officers, and then deletes the original Word document.

  • A consulting company wants to set up a system to store, retrieve, and reuse the documents that it creates for each project. At the end of each project, the company wants each project manager to go to a central Web page and use a Microsoft Silverlight control on the Web page to archive their documents in a fixed format. From there, the system retrieves all documents in the project folders and stores them in a central archive.

    Note

For more information about Silverlight, see Microsoft Silverlight.
