Determining Changes To Make to a Device

Device settings are configured by provisioning the device. This involves creating a provisioning XML file that contains configuration information, and then sending the file to the device. Configuration Manager and Configuration Service Providers configure the device based on the contents of the provisioning XML file.
The initial provisioning is called bootstrapping the device, and is typically done during manufacture. This process configures the device to connect to data services and access WAP sites, Internet sites, and corporate services. The initial settings are in ROM, in a configuration file called provxml.provxml. For information about bootstrap mechanisms, see Bootstrapping a Device.
You can also use the bootstrap procedure to change the device's security model from the default configuration. For information about bootstrapping a device after manufacture, see Provisioning Using a ROM Configuration XML File.
Provisioning the device after bootstrap is called continuous provisioning. The following list shows some of the tasks you can perform by means of provisioning the device:
- Change core configuration and registry settings.
- Configure, add, update, or remove additional software.
- Update operating system components with new software components.
- Personalize and add user interface (UI) components.
- Activate software that is available in ROM or installed over the air.
